Last week was International Compost Awareness Week (May 7 – 13, 2023)! This year’s theme “For Healthier Soil, Healthier Food...Compost!” focuses on how compost can have a role in helping feed the world by making our soil healthier, and producing healthier food.
Composting materials, such as food scraps and yard trimmings, converts them into a nutrient-rich soil amendment that communities can use to promote soil fertility and productivity, improve water quality, reduce stormwater runoff and soil erosion, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Are you interested in composting? The Town of Carrboro offers Earth Machine’s Backyard Compost Bins for just $45 and kitchen pails for $5. To learn more about backyard composting or order a backyard compost bin or kitchen pail visit https://www.carrboronc.gov/2500/Composting .
Carrboro residents can also drop-off food scraps and non-recyclable paper at the Carrboro’s Farmer’s Market on Saturdays or at one of Orange County’s Food Waste Drop-off Centers.
