Planning, Zoning & Inspections

COVID-19 update:
Planning, Zoning, and Inspections staff are available to assist you during this challenging time.  The Town offices are presently open to the public following state and local guidelines.  Please contact us IN ADVANCE via phone or email to make an appointment with our staff regarding your project!

Welcome to the Planning Department of the Town of Carrboro.

The Department helps the town identify and carry out its vision for sustaining existing and future populations and offers professional planning, zoning, building code, engineering, and geographic information services to residents, property owners, businesses, and visitors. Departmental staff also provide support to a number of standing citizen advisory boards and commissions and to citizen committees that are formed to consider special projects.

Please feel free to stop by our offices on the 2nd floor of Town Hall or contact a staff member to set up a meeting to explore your topic of interest.

For maps, downloadable data, and other information that might help you learn more about the Town or be of use in your next development project, please visit Geographic Information Services or our library of planning documents.

The departmental structure includes three Divisions:

Planning, which handles long-range, environmental and transportation planning as well as requests for property rezoning.

Zoning, which handles land use permitting and compliance and administration of the development review process.

Inspections which handles residential and commercial building code compliance and Minimum Housing Code enforcement. Visit this link to learn about permits for building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical projects.

The Zoning Division’s Active Projects page provides information on the location and status of current development projects.

Thanks for visiting. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions.
