Mission & Values
The REC is devoted to educating constituents on the historical legacy of racism and the ways in which it shows up in Carrboro culture, policies, and institutions; amplify the BILPOC voices of Carrboro so that our focus addresses the true needs of the community; and influence decision and policymakers to prioritize equity and justice in all matters of policy, procedures and practices that impact the most vulnerable of Carrboro. Our work is grounded on our shared values of: Teamwork, Leadership, Devotion, Truth, Ethics and Accountability.
Background
In 2017, the Carrboro Truth Plaque Community Task Force was established to recognize Carrboro’s history while uplifting the truth and acknowledging an unjust past. The first plaque, installed in 2019 at Carrboro Town Hall, explains Julian Carr’s ties to racial segregation. A second plaque was unveiled in August 2021 for the Freedman School. The Truth Plaque Community Task Force merged with the Racial Equity Commission in December of 2024.
Duties & Responsibilities
The commission shall advise and work with the Town Council, Race & Equity Officer, and Town staff to educate, provide leadership, and facilitate on-going equitable engagement within the immediate and greater Carrboro community toward the goal of creating a community of inclusiveness in which political, economic, social, and cultural institutions are no longer predicated and influenced by race.
All members shall complete race and equity training provided by the Town's Core Team. This training may be provided before or after appointment.
