A Message from Our Mayor

Hello and Welcome to Carrboro!

Carrboro has come a long way from its roots. Originally established as a rail spur for the nearby University of North Carolina, we soon became a company town for workers at the Alberta Cotton Mill. Where we were once thought of as “the wrong side of the tracks,” we have since become a progressive haven and a remarkable example of a diverse, exciting town with a difficult to articulate but easy to feel identity. Here, mill houses anchor our walkable, wireless downtown, which is the heart of our community.

We embrace the arts and a wide variety of cultural activities. The ArtsCenter hosts national and local performers, theatrical productions, art exhibits, classes for children and adults, and summer camps for kids of all ages. Catch a show at the iconic Cat’s Cradle—a fixture of downtown Carrboro that features established and local bands in a cool, intimate setting. Visit our local galleries and venues during the monthly 2nd Friday ArtWalks and enjoy listening to live music on the lawn of Weaver Street Market on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Shopping local is important to us, as evidenced by our many unique restaurants, coffee shops, and stores. The Carrboro Farmers’ Market has been touted in Bon Appetit Magazine as the best in North Carolina and recognized by Martha Stewart Magazine as one of the six “Great Markets” in the country. The market slogan “Locally Grown, Nationally Known” says it best. All farms must be within 50 miles of town, one of the ways we respect our farmers and strengthen the local economy. We are a foodie haven, offering everything from food trucks to fine dining and a local brewery.

We also love to exercise. Miles of sidewalks and trails, a disc golf course, beautiful Bolin Creek, and a vibrant running and cycling community keeps us fit. In fact, we are the only “Silver Level Bicycle Friendly” municipality in North Carolina!

Finally, we recently welcomed our very first hotel, the beautiful Hampton Inn & Suites. Now, when you come to play, you will have a place to stay. Whether you bike, walk, or take advantage of our free bus service, I hope you will enjoy all that our community has to offer.
